"Brass" is not one material. It is a family of alloys, and choosing the right grade is what separates a part that performs from one that fails. Add the right surface finish and you've matched the metal to the job exactly. Here's a buyer's overview of the brass grades and finishes that matter most.

The brass grades, and when to use them

• Free-cutting brass (C36000, CW614N, CZ121, CuZn39Pb3): the workhorse. Superb machinability for high-volume turned parts, fittings and connectors at tight tolerances.
• Low-lead & eco brass (CW511L, eco grades): for potable-water, medical and food-contact parts where lead limits apply. Meets NSF/drinking-water requirements.
• DZR brass (CW602N, dezincification-resistant): resists corrosion in aggressive water and marine environments; the choice for plumbing and outdoor fittings.
• Naval & high-tensile brass: added strength and seawater corrosion resistance for marine hardware and load-bearing components.
• Custom alloys: matched to your drawing when a program calls for a specific composition or property.

Why the finish matters

The surface finish protects the brass, changes its appearance, and can be a compliance requirement. Common options include:

• Electroplating: nickel, chrome, tin, zinc, silver or gold for corrosion resistance, conductivity or appearance.
• Coatings: GEOMET, ZINTEK and trivalent zinc for high corrosion resistance and RoHS compliance.
• Mechanical finishes: polishing (mirror), brushing (satin), blasting, vibratory and barrel finishing.
• Treatments: passivation, blackening, bright-dipping and anti-tarnish for stability and shelf life.
