If you buy precision machined components, you'll see two certifications on nearly every supplier's profile: ISO 9001 and IATF 16949. They sound similar and they are related, but they are not interchangeable. Choosing a supplier certified to the wrong one (or paying a premium for one you don't need) is a common, avoidable mistake. Here's the plain-English version.
ISO 9001: the universal quality baseline
ISO 9001 (current version 9001:2015) is the world's most widely used Quality Management System (QMS) standard. It certifies that a manufacturer has documented, repeatable processes for controlling quality, handling corrective actions, and continuously improving. It applies to any industry.
For most industrial, electrical, plumbing, and general-purpose components, ISO 9001 is exactly what you need. It tells you the supplier runs a disciplined, audited quality system.
IATF 16949: the automotive layer on top
IATF 16949 is built on top of ISO 9001, adding the stricter requirements the automotive industry demands. It layers in things like:
- PPAP (Production Part Approval Process)
- APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning)
- MSA (Measurement System Analysis) and deeper SPC
- Zero-defect mindset and tighter traceability
You need a supplier with IATF 16949 when you're producing automotive parts for an OEM or Tier-1 supply chain. It is essential there, and usually overkill for a general plumbing fitting.
Which one does your program need?
ISO 9001 for almost everything. IATF 16949 when the automotive supply chain requires it.
- General industrial / electrical / plumbing components? ISO 9001 is the right baseline.
- Automotive or EV production parts? Require IATF 16949.
- Either way, ask for the supporting documentation, meaning material certificates, inspection reports and declarations, not just the certificate itself.
